Courses in the Program

Each track is a one semester program (not combined)

EKG ImageEKG/ECG Technician track - Electrocardiograph theory and techniques certificate:

  • ECG Theory (CVTE-104
  • ECG Techniques (CVTE-105).

The Telemetry Technician track - Advanced Electorcardiograph theory and monitoring certificate:

  • ECG Theory (CVTE-106)
  • Advanced Cardiac Monitoring (CVTE-108)

Certificate of Achievement

Students who successfully complete both the ECG/EKG and Telemetry Technician programs (CVTE 104, 105, 106, and 108) are eligible to apply for the Certificate of Achievement in Telemetry/ECG Technician from the college.

Cardiovascular Technology 104

Electrocardiographic Theory

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CVTE 105.

This course will provide the electrocardiograph theory and principles required to perform basic 12-lead electrocardiograms. Basic cardiac anatomy and physiology will be covered, with a focus on the cardiac conduction system. Basic rhythm strip analysis will be included.  This course and CVTE 105 are designed to train students in the administration of a resting 12-lead electrocardiogram, stress testing, and ambulatory monitoring, and to prepare the student for the Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) exam through Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Cardiovascular Technology 105

Cardiovascular Technology

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CVTE 104

A course in the practical application of the technique for recording 12-lead electrocardiograms.  There is an emphasis on the techniques for administering a 12-lead electrocardiogram. Students will perform electrocardiograms in an on-campus laboratory setting and be assigned to lab rotations in local clinical facilities for a portion of the semester. This course and CVTE 104 are designed to prepare the student for the Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) exam through Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Cardiovascular Technology 106

Advanced Electrocardiographic Studies

Prerequisite: A "C" grade or higher in CVTE 104 and 105 or equivalent.

A study of the theory, clinical application and administration of specialized monitoring equipment to identify and analyze cardiac rhythms. This course along with CVTE 108 will prepare the student to take the Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician exam through  Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Cardiovascular Technology 108

Advanced Cardiac Monitoring

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CVTE 106.

A study of the advanced cardiac dysrhythmias that Cardiac Monitoring Technicians are required to know before employment can be obtained in this field.  Special attention will be given to life-threatening dysrhythmias along with techniques for distinguishing between aberrant rhythms and life-threatening dysrhythmias. Treatment for abnormal rhythms will be discussed.  This course along with CVTE 106 will prepare the student to take the Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician exam though Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
