COURSE ELIGIBILITY is required of all students prior to enrolling in any Math course. Course eligibility is obtained by one of the following:

  • Satisfactorily complete all prerequisite courses.

  • Math assessment to determine current math skills.

  • Obtain a Math waiver form from the Counseling Center.

Present to the counseling staff college transcripts showing satisfactory completion of equivalent prerequisite courses. When possible, bring a course description to assist in determining course equivalency.

Students with transcripts from foreign colleges should contact the Mathematics Department or the Counseling Center.

Courses numbered 080 to 090 meet all Title 5 standards for Non-degree Credit.
Courses numbered 103 and above meet all Title 5 standards for Degree Credit.

BASIC MATHEMATICS

2 units, 2 hours lecture or 1 hour lecture and 2 hours computer assisted instruction
Recommended Preparation: Completion of Matriculation Process is highly recommended.
Fundamentals of arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are reviewed with stress placed upon mental arithmetic involving whole numbers up to 12. Operations with fraction, decimals and percent are stressed. Area and volume formula for fundamental shapes will be stressed. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. MATHEMATICS 088

BASIC MATHEMATICS AND PRE-ALGEBRA

4 units, 4 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation: Completion of Matriculation Process is highly recommended.
This course provides a review of basic arithmetic; the derivation and use of selected measurement concepts; and the development of pre-algebra ideas such as variable, signed numbers and equations. These topics are explored in a context of problem solving and efficient calculator use. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

PRE-ALGEBRA FOR THE MATH ANXIOUS

This course will teach students to overcome mathematics anxiety and prepare them for elementary algebra. Emphasis in the course will be on developing self confidence through successfully solving arithmetic, algebraic and geometric problems. Students will learn effective skills, including cooperative learning and test taking techniques. A variety of nontraditional materials and techniques will be used in the presentation of concepts. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

MATHEMATICS 090

ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA

5 units, 5 hours lecture, or 4 hours lecture plus 2 hours computer assisted instruction
Recommended Preparation: Experience has shown you need a strong background in Arithmetic and Pre-Algebra to succeed in MATH 090. Completion of Matriculation Process is highly recommended.
Vocabulary of algebra, translation from English to algebra and evaluation of literal expressions. An introduction to the basic properties of the integers, rational numbers, and real numbers; polynomials, rational expressions, integral exponents, and radicals; simple functions and relations, graphing, solving linear equations and inequalities, linear systems, and second degree equations. Recommended for students with little or no recent knowledge of algebra. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (Nondegree credit course)

MATHEMATICS 090L

COMPUTER TUTORIAL REVIEW: ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA

1 Unit, 3 hours laboratory
This course uses a variety of educational tools to assist students. It could be used to strengthen prerequisite skills prior to enrolling in a specific course or to receive supplemental assistance while enrolled in an elementary algebra course. MATHEMATICS 096

FOUNDATIONS FOR STATISTICS AND QUANTITATIVE REASONING

6 units, 6 hours lecture
This class satisfies the prerequisite for only MATH 160 or MATH 120.  The emphasis of this course will be on the practical aspects of mathematics and its applications.  Topics include: data analysis, sample statistics and graphs, measure of central tendency, simplifying algebraic expressions, problem solving strategies, solving algebraic equations and inequalities, algebraic functions and their graphs.  This class is NOT intended  for business, science, computer science, engineering, or math majors and is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only.

MATHEMATICS 097

PLANE GEOMETRY

3 units, 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: MATH 090 or equivalent.
This course introduces essential vocabulary, properties and characteristics of geometric objects and geometric constructions. The concepts of plane geometry are developed inductively and then deductively. Integrated computer instruction offers a dynamic presentation of geometric concepts. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only.

MATHEMATICS 102

MATH TUTOR/SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

3 units, 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: A "CR" grade in MATH 090 or equivalent.
This course includes strategies on how to tutor addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions using a minimum of four different types of manipulatives, and an in-depth study of fractions at the elementary level. It also includes an overview of the California State Standards in the area of Mathematics for Grades 3-6, and of current trends in the teaching of mathematics. Recommended for students who are interested in and elementary school environment. Upon successful completion of this class, students will be able to tutor elementary school students, grades 3-6, in arithmetic.

MATHEMATICS 103

INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA

3 units, 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: A "CR" grade in MATH 090 or equivalent.
Graphic, numeric, analytic and applied problems on topics include linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions, exponents, and radicals. Additional topics include systems of equations, algebraic fractions, radicals, mathematical sentences involving inequalities and absolute value, and complex numbers. A student can earn a maximum of 5 units for taking MATH 103 and MATH 110.

MATHEMATICS 108

BEGINNING & INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA FOR BUSINESS, MATH, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING MAJORS

6 units, 6 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation: Placement in Math 090
A compressed course that covers elementary algebra and in-depth coverage of intermediate algebra intended for the student who has some previous experience with algebra.  This course includes topics related to a mathematical foundation for college students majoring in business, math, science and engineering and emphasizes the study of the behavior and characteristics of linear, quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions from graphic, numeric, analytic and applied perspectives.  Graphing calculators are required for this course.  This course serves as a prerequisite for MATH 120, MATH 125, MATH 160, MATH 170, MATH 175, MATH 176, and MATH 178.  A student can earn a maximum of (six) 6 units for taking Math 103 and Math 108.  Not open to students with credit in Math 110.

INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA FOR BUSINESS, MATH, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING MAJORS

5 units, 5 hours lecture or 4 hours lecture plus 2 hours computer assisted instruction (4.5 hours lecture and 1.5 hours laboratory)
Prerequisite: A "CR" grade in MATH 090 or equivalent.
Application of graphic, numeric, and analytic methods to model, interpret, and solve real-world problems involving: linear, quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions; systems of linear and quadratic equations or inequalities; and absolute value equations or inequalities. Interpret, model and analyze a collection of data and / or application problems. Additional topics include conic sections and an introduction to matrices and determinants. Computational techniques developed in beginning algebra are prerequisite skills for this course. This course is appropriate for students with at knowledge of beginning algebra or who have had at least two years of high school algebra but have not used it for several years. A student can earn a maximum of 5 units for taking MATH 103 and MATH 110.

Blending the mathematical topics of sets, whole numbers, numeration, number theory, integers, rational and irrational numbers, measurement relations, functions and logic. The course will investigate the interrelation-ships of the above topics using a problem-solving approach. The course will also investigate appropriate use of technology in the classroom.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMING WITH FORTRAN

3 units, 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: A "C" grade or higher in MATH 103 or 110 or equivalent.
Problem solving using FORTRAN 77 in a terminal/time-sharing environment. Mathematical applications from statistics, mathematics, engineering, physical science, business and information systems are used to illustrate the development of structured programs using flowcharts and top-down design. The problems will also provide the framework for learning the FORTRAN 77 syntax for arithmetic computations, input-output, decisions, loops, functions, and subroutines.
