Grossmont College was named No. 55 in the country for the number of associate degrees awarded to Hispanic, or Latinx, students during the 2018-19 academic year by Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine. The college was also recognized as No. 65 in the country for Latinx student enrollment during the same period. The announcement came as part of Hispanic Outlook's annual special issue announcing its Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics.
“As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Grossmont College is proud to have high Latinx student enrollment, but it’s more gratifying to see an even higher ranking for a mark of student success – obtaining their associate’s degrees,” said Grossmont College President Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh, Ed.D. “This is also a particularly meaningful ranking as it comes at the end of our college’s sixth annual Latinx Heritage Month celebration.”
Hispanic Outlook in Education Magazine annually produces the national ranking that analyzes data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set (IPEDS) collected by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education. During the 2018 – 2019 academic year, Grossmont College awarded 2,561 Associate degrees, with 817 of those degrees awarded to students who identified as Hispanic or Latinx. During that same academic year, 36 percent of Grossmont College’s 17,835 students identified as Hispanic or Latinx.
Over the last three years, as Grossmont College has attracted a higher percentage of Latinx students and the percentage of Latinx students earning associate’s degrees has risen at a slightly higher rate, which reflects the college's achievements in improving both student success and equity during that period.
The Hispanic Outlook on Education is a national monthly magazine that provides education news, innovations, networking, resources and the latest trends impacting students from kindergarten through graduate school all while maintaining a unique Hispanic perspective.
