Problem 10 Solution

back to Problem

Spectrum A is for 3-bromotoluene.

Spectrum B is for the benzoate.

Both molecules are expected to show 7 peaks; however, spectrum B has a peak at 168 ppm due to the carbonyl carbon of the ester group.

In spectrum A, the methyl group of bromotoluene is obvious at 22 ppm; the remaining peaks are all in the aromatic region.

In spectrum B, the carbon atoms of the two OCH3 groups can be seen at 52 ppm and 56 ppm.
