Background and Bio

Dr. Marilyn Lee (Estep) Ivanovici earned her Bacceloreate at University of Akron then continued on to graduate studies in Education, for which her dissertation project presented a thoroughly documented historical survey of the expansion of the off-campus education centers of Chapman College, a liberal arts college in Orange, California that began responding in 1958 to the military’s need for on-base, fully degreed academic programs. Her dissertation research with Chapman brought her to San Diego, where she earned her doctorate in Education in 1982.

Afterward, Marilyn became a part-time instructor of English at a variety of colleges in the area. However, it wouldn't be until the spring semester of 1997 that she would become an adjunct instructor for Grossmont College. Two years later, as one of Mary Donnelly's final acts as Chair of the English Department, Dr. Estep, along with fellow adjunct instructor Anthony Ding, was officially welcomed onto the staff. By the fall semester of that year, she began teaching full-time for the Department under the name, Dr. Marilyn Ivanovici.

As a part-time instructor, Estep primarily had taught basic and intermediate level composition classes. As Dr. Ivanovici, however, she changed her focus to basic writing and reading skills courses. Over the next decade, Marilyn became a participating instructor in Grossmont College’s Project Success Program, a learning communities program innovated by Dr. Mary Donnelly and Susan Jensen that links basic reading and writing courses. She gained a popular reputation among her students for her course reading lists, which frequently featured a culturally diverse and sometimes controversial selection of contemporary literature.

In 2011, with over twenty-five years of experience as an English instructor in San Diego County colleges and universities, Marilyn retired from the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District, after which she returned for one more semester of adjunct teaching at Grossmont before saying farewell to the classroom.
