Project Success is a fundamental program combining English 090R with English 090, English098R with English 098, and English 110R with English 110. English 090R, 098R and 110R are courses designed to improve comprehension skills, vocabulary skills and reading speed. English 090 teaches basic English skills. English 098 instructs the student in paragraph and simple essay development. English 110 instructs the student in more sophisticated essay forms. These courses are linked to ensure a student’s improvement in language and communication skills.
Students receive specific instruction in:
Project Success is a transfer program combining GE English courses with GE courses in other academic fields such as Humanities, Psychology, History, Math, Sociology and Philosophy. These linkages provide students with opportunities to discover the similarities between such courses, and encourage students to develop study groups that share common goals. The Project Success staff organizes the course content of these linked classes to promote a clearer understanding of how composition and literature relate to other course contents. Instructors work with each other and the students to develop critical thinking skills. The following courses are or have been taught concurrently. Please check class schedule for current links.
Project Success is a program that focuses on innovative approaches in the learning community. Contextualized Learning Communities have been developed to enhance student opportunities to improve basic skills and participate in collaborative educational environments, while mastering skills and knowledge in specific career fields. The Allied Health community links English 098, English 098R, and Math 090 to prepare students for the rigors of the courses in the health professions. Other contextualized links prepare students for careers in Business and the Administration of Justice. Additional contextualized links are in development.

Cluster courses have been developed to enhance student opportunities to develop basic skills and participate in collaborative educational environments. The Honors Cluster integrates transfer level disciplines that challenge the academically gifted student. Each semester instructors develop new ideas and approaches to expand perspectives. The Reading Academy links English 090 with English 090R and PDC 130 and prepares students for the academic rigors of college courses.
Research indicates that students who enrolled in PROJECT SUCCESS completed more units and earned a higher grade point average than students with similar skills who did not participate in the project.
The PROJECT SUCCESS staff have been selected for their outstanding teaching skills and their commitment to the theory that students need not experience failure within the college classroom.
Honors Interdisciplinary Cluster - English 120 and History 105 and Humanities 110. First-Time Freshmen are invited to participate in the Honors Cluster on the basis of a high school GPA of 3.2 or above. Freshmen must take the English Placement Test and place at the English 120 level. The recommendation of high school faculty may also be considered for enrollment.
Continuing Students at Grossmont College are invited to participate in the Honors Cluster if they have completed 12 units and maintained a GPA of 3.2. Students also must be eligible for English 120. Recommendation of college faculty may be used for enrollment in the program.
Students Transferring from other colleges are invited to participate if they have completed 12 units and maintained a GPA of 3.2. Students also must be eligible for English 120. Recommendation of college faculty may be used for enrollment in the program.
Students with extenuating circumstances who do not meet the above requirements should contact Joan Ahrens (619-644-7869), who will then review individual cases.
