Train to perform 12-lead resting electrocardiograms as an ECG technician.  Continue with the program to train to work as a telemetry technician, learning heart rhythm analysis.

The ECG Technician Track is a 1 semester program that includes concurrent enrollment in Electrocardiographic Theory (CVTE-104) and Electrocardiographic Technique (CVTE-105).  This 1 semester track prepares you for the Certified Cardiographic Technician exam through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

*Note: sometimes EKG is used interchangably with ECG - both mean the same thing.  Why are there two different abbreviations? It’s actually quite simple—the word electrocardiogram was first used in the German language, and it is spelled Elektro-kardiographie.

The Telemetry Technician Track is also a 1 semester program that includes concurrent enrollment in Advanced Electrocardiographic Studies (CVTE-106) and Advanced Electrocardiographic Monitoring (CVTE-108).  This 1 semester track prepares you for the Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician exam through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Although students are not required to take the 2 certification exams once the courses are complete, passing the exams greatly increases the employment opportunities.

Completing both tracks also provides the graduate with greater opportunities for employment as either an ECG Technician or a Telemetry Technician.

Electrocardiograph Technicians (ECG)

Electrocardiograph Technicians (ECG) administer 12-lead ECG's to patients and assess the heart by viewing its electrical activity. This entry-level position of Electrocardiograph Technician operates and maintains the ECG machines which detect and record electronic impulses transmitted by the heart during and between heartbeats. With additional training, stress testing and Holter monitoring can be conducted.  These certified technicians may work in hospitals, clinics or in physician's offices.

The Telemetry Technician (TELE)

The Telemetry Technician (TELE) analyzes cardiac rhythms on multiple patients that are observed on cardiac monitors and reports on rhythm abnormalities.  The Telemetry Technician is a higher level position that requires in-depth knowledge of all normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms; this knowledge is crucial for positive patient outcomes.

To submit an application, please see the Application Process page on this site for all requirements needed.

The ECG/Telemetry Technician Program will no longer be able to accept FLU MIST (nasal spray) per the new Federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as of 7/06/2016.  Students must have the influenza vaccination which is offered through Grossmont College Health Services or a physician's office.

If you are enrolled or have accepted a seat into any other Grossmont College Health Professions Program, you will be ineligible to receive an invitation to the ECG Telemetry Program . Students wishing to apply to the ECG Telemetry Program must apply for an entry date which does not conflict with the completion of the Health Professions Program you are currently enrolled in.

"All communication between the program office and the student is by email. All emails sent to student on the waitlist and currently in the program are sent with a delivery and read receipt. If you chose not to check the read receipt, the program is not responsible if the student states that they did not receive the email".
