There is no single "right" answer to this essay; what matters most is your grasp of the work you are talking about. Thus, research in outside sources is not required. You will want to use the topic of the essay as a vehicle to explain the assigned reading. Where applicable, make specific references to the text. (A parenthetical author and page number in your essay is sufficient to footnote references.) Analytic rigor, thoughtfulness, and clear, persuasive writing will determine your grade. In addition to content, all essays will be graded on grammar, style, and structure.
a. Before the next class session, tell someone outside the class about Ishmael and report to the class about the encounter.
b. After reading Ishmael, especially the Bwana role-play, describe the frame-work that shapes the decisions and priorities of Takers -- no trust, need for control, need to establish our own security, etc. Relate this to the arguments of the feminist, animal, and green philosophers we have studied in this section of the course. In addition, please compare/contrast Ishmael's arguments with whatever other political philosophers we have studied in the course you feel to be relevant (Locke, Burke, anarchists, Marcuse, etc.). What are the limits and costs of Ishmael's approach and could any other policy options be viable in a decidedly non-utopian world, or in effect, are we captive to a myth?
