The Creative Writing Program at Grossmont College fosters the development of creative writers at all skill levels in a supportive, professional, and dynamic atmosphere. It is our mission to serve and engage students, faculty, and the community actively through a rich variety of readings and other literary events that are always free and open to the public. The Creative Writing Program seeks to cultivate a diverse literary community and to celebrate and promote literature and its role in our culture. ENGL 126: Creative Writing
3 cr., 3 hrs. Satisfies General Education for: Grossmont College C3. Transfers to: CSU, UC (credit limited). Meets all Title 5 standards for Associate Degree Credit.
Prerequisites: A “C” or “Pass” grade or higher in English 110 or assessment for English 120 or equivalent.
Corequisite: None.
Recommended Preparation: A “C” or “Pass” grade or higher in English 120.
Description: Introduction to the craft of creative writing through study and analysis of the works of established, contemporary, and peer writers. Students will write short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama and use the workshop method and instructor feedback to evaluate and revise work. Opportunity for inclusion in student readings, college literary publications, and other web venues
ENGL 130: Short Fiction Writing I
3 cr., 3 hrs. Transfers to: CSU, UC (credit limited). Meets all Title 5 standards for Associate Degree Credit.
Course Prerequisites: A “C” grade or higher or “Pass” in English 110 or equivalent or assessment recommendation for English 120.
Recommended Preparation: A “C” or “Pass” grade or higher in English 126 or equivalent.
Description: The first in a four-course sequence, this class is designed to familiarize students with the study, analysis, and application of fundamental tools, techniques, and forms used by established and contemporary authors of fiction. By composing and submitting original short fiction, students learn to use the writers' workshop to develop their skills as critics and writers of fiction. Students have opportunities for recognition and public readings of their own work.
