First Semester Course 120:

5 units, 5 hours lecture

An introductory course to the language and the culture of its speakers. The purpose of course 120 is to facilitate the practical application of the language in everyday oral and written communication at the beginning novice level. Since the focus will be on basic communication skills, the class will be conducted in the target language as much as possible. While becoming familiar with the culture of the target language, students will learn structures that will enable them to function in the language in everyday contexts.

Second Semester Course 121:

5 units, 5 hours lecture

Prerequisite: A "C" or "CR" grade or higher in course 120 or two years of high school language studies or equivalent.

Course 121 is the continuation of course 120. The course will continue to develop oral and written skills based on practical everyday needs. Students with three years of high school language studies should enroll in Spanish 220.

Course 161:

Basic Conversational Arabic for Healtcare Professionals

1 unit, 1-hour lecture

Prerequisite: No prerequisite

An introductory Arabic course to basic medical communication and interaction between healthcare professionals and Arabic-speaking patients. The course objective is to provide the healthcare professionals with elementary conversational skills and further exploration of Arabic culture to effectively communicate with the Arabic-speaking patients.  Many significant cultural aspects foster cross-cultural communication.


Course 196 A-B-C-D

(Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish): Community Service Learning Experience (CSLE)

1 unit, 5 hours work experience plus concurrent enrollment in 6 units at Grossmont College.

Prerequisite: A "C" or "CR" grade or higher in course 120 or equivalent.

Community Service Learning Experience (CSLE) is a community outreach program which promotes the national agenda of volunteer engagement. The purpose is to provide students an opportunity to explore options and careers in a selected area of study.

Third Semester Course 122: Arabic Speaker I

5 units, 5 hours lecture

Prerequisite: No prerequisite

Fundamentals of spoken and written Arabic for the bilingual speaker. This course is designed to help Arabic-speaking students further improve their oral and written communication skills.

Emphasis on writing, translation, reading comprehension, and vocabulary building at the intermediate level in a cultural and linguistic context. Exposure to the diversity within the cultures of the Arabic-speaking world.

Third Semester Course 220:

5 units, 5 hours lecture

Prerequisite: A "C" or "CR" grade or higher in courses 121 or 122, or three years of high school language studies or equivalent.

Course 220 is the continuation of course 121. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading and writing skills in order to acquire proficiency in the target language. Students with four years of high school language studies should enroll in course 221.

Fourth Semester Course 123: Arabic for the Arabic Speaker II

5 units, 5 hours lecture

Prerequisite: Arabic 122

This course is designed to help bilingual students further improve their oral and written communication skills. In addition, it provides the Arabic -speaker with the linguistic and learning skills required for successfully completing upper division courses in Arabic .

This course will be beneficial to students interested in gaining proficiency in translation skills needed for employment as bilingual interpreters.

Fourth Semester Course 221:

5 units, 5 hours lecture

Prerequisite: A "C" or "CR" grade or higher in course 220 or four years of high school language studies or equivalent.

Course 221 is the continuation of course 220. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading and writing skills with emphasis on oral proficiency in the target language.

Conversational I/II Courses 250/251:

3 units, 3 hours lecture

Prerequisite: A "C" or "CR" grade or higher in course 121 or three years of high school language studies or equivalent.

The conversation courses will continue to develop oral, listening, reading and writing skills with emphasis on oral proficiency.

Ordinarily, the student with two years of high school language will enroll in level two in college, three years of high school language level three, and with four years of high school language level four. A student may receive college credit if she/he enters the language curriculum at a level one semester below the standard placement from high school.
