Cesar Chavez Day, feat. Agustín Lira & "Alma"
Friday, April 5, 2002, Room 220, 7 p.m.
An evening of discussion and music with Agustín Lira and his musical group "Alma" will focus on the role of art and culture in the Chicano movement. Lira, who joined Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in 1965, was one of the founding members of El Teatro Campensino, along with playwright Luis Valdez. The two-part—free and open to the public—begins with a discussion/Q&A led by Lira on such topics as "What is the role of art and culture in society? What role did the arts play in the UFW struggle for equality and civil rights Whose responsibility is it to 'keep the flame alive?' Is cultural identify important in this day and age?" Following the Q&A will be a musical program celebrating Cesar Chavez and the struggle of the United Farm Workers. "Alma" musicians Patricia Wells Solorzano and Ravi Knypstra will join Lira for the presentation. The program is one in a series sponsored by the Grossmont College World Arts Cultural Organizing Committee (WACO), the Associate Students of Grossmont College, and other campus-based organizations. Organized by Michael Golden, WACO Chair.
