Overview of State Guidelines

The purpose of the Professional Development Office and of the Faculty Professional Development Committee is to coordinate meaningful professional learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and administration.

According to the California Ed Code, a community college district may designate from 1-15 days of the state-mandated teaching year of 175 days for faculty development.  At Grossmont College, we have designated ten days of the teaching year for this purpose: five in the Fall semester and five in the Spring that are related to “staffstudent, and instructional improvement.” (Title 5, sec. 55720).

The FLEX Calendar Guidelines describes these staff, student, and instructional improvement activities in the following areas:

  • Staff Improvement
  • Student Improvement
  • Instructional Improvement

All activities should be linked to the comprehensive plan for staff development and to the goals and objectives of the flexible calendar program. In addition, the staff development plan and the flexible calendar program should be linked to the goals and mission of the college. The flexible calendar programs primarily intended to facilitate faculty imporvement of the instructional program. However, any institutionally planned activity should be made available to other college staff as well (title 5, section 55724(a)(5)).

Authorized Uses Of Professional Development Funds

The authorized uses of Professional Development funds as outlined in AB1725 by the State Chancellor's Office are:

  • Improvement of teaching.
  • Maintenance of current academic and technical knowledge and skills.
  • In-service training for vocational education and employment preparation programs.
  • Retraining to meet changing institutional needs.
  • Intersegmental exchange programs.
  • Development of innovations in instructional and administrative techniques and program effectiveness.
  • Computer and technological proficiency programs.
  • Courses and training which implement affirmative action and upward mobility.
  • Other activities determined by the Board of Governors to be related to educational and professional development pursuant to criteria established by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.

Classified Staff and Administrators

Classified employees and administrators have no Professional Development requirements at this time, but are encouraged to participate in Professional Development activities with the approval of their supervisors or managers.
