Background and Bio

After completing her A.B. in Junior High Education, San Diego native Vesta Allender (Penrod) Gibbs obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from Claremont College in 1948, where her thesis focus was on the rights to education and the civil rights of Mexican-Americans. That same year, Gibbs accepted a newly created position with San Diego County’s Office of Education, which provided business and curricular services to county schools.  In fall of 1964, after her husband joined San Diego City College faculty as an art instructor, Vesta Gibbs accepted an offer of hire at Grossmont Junior College’s fledgling English Department.

For the next thirty years at Grossmont College, Vesta Penrod Gibbs would teach primarily English 120: Reading and Composition, taking an occasional departure to teach English 115: Term Paper Techniques. However, throughout her career, she continued to pursue her own educational advancement: records show that she took year-long sabbatical leave between 1975 and 1976. Whether this coincides with her post-graduate studies from the University of Lincoln, in the UK, is as yet unverified.

In 1993, after the death of her husband, Gibbs officially retired from the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District. She passed away at the end of 2007.
