Background and Bio

Elizabeth S. "Liz" Juul graduated from University of California at Berkeley in 1958 with a Bachelor's in English. She subsequently advanced to graduate studies at UC Berkeley, from which she earned her Master's degree in English by 1961. The following year, she accepted a teaching position in English at the newly opened campus of Merced College in San Jose, California.

By 1964, however, Juul had already relocated to the El Cajon area work for the Grossmont Junior College District, where she taught core courses such as English Essentials and Introduction to the Study of Literature. However, while teaching Literature of the Western World during the Fall 1966 semester, she found herself humorously name-checked in the campus newspaper regarding the Duplicating Department's refusal of her request to copy some Aristotle writings—on the grounds she did not have the author's permission to reprint them!

Aside from her expertise in literature, Juul was also a capable pianist who even participated in the Grossmont Music Department's orchestral and choral shows. The Spring 1967 semester, however, was Juul's last with Grossmont Junior College.

By August of that year, Elizabeth Juul had become Elizabeth J. Breen and ended her contract with the Grossmont College District, after which she moved with her husband to Ohio, where he was completing an advanced degree. Fifteen years later, however, in 1982, Elizabeth Juul Breen, herself, would earn an Ed.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle), for which her doctoral research focused on reading comprehension levels among community college students.
