Background and Bio

Dorothy Ledbetter graduated in 1958 from Northern Colorado College in Greenley, Colorado with a degree emphasis in Social Studies. Afterwards, Ledbetter moved with her family to San Diego’s east county and taught English at El Capitan High School for nearly ten years. During her tenure at El Cap, she enrolled in graduate studies at San Diego State College and, in 1969, earned her Master’s degree in English. The following year, Ledbetter was welcomed into a full-time staff position with the English Department at Grossmont Junior College.

During her nearly twenty-five year tenure at Grossmont College, Ledbetter taught primarily English 120: Reading and Composition and English 110: College Composition, but she also occasionally taught Introduction to Literature, American Literature, and Term Paper Techniques. Outside of teaching, she was passionately interested in aviation and learned basic aeronautic science with Grossmont’s own Ken Carter in 1971, after which she obtained her own pilot’s license in 1972. She and her husband subsequently became members of the Coastal Fliers, a club of aviation hobbyists who practiced their flight skills and scheduled recreational trips in their small-engine aircraft. Ledbetter’s flying hobby even drew the attention of the Grossmont College newspaper, which featured a story about her in March 1973.

Dorothy Ledbetter retired form the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District in 1994 but settled in the area of Grossmont College and for many years thereafter remained in communication with some of her former English Department colleagues.
