Past Full-Time English Faculty

The term "Past Full-Time English Faculty" is here used comprehensively to identify any instructor who accepted a salaried position on staff in the English Department between 1961 and present and who is no longer serving the Department in that capacity. The vast majority of these were tenured faculty who retired after many years of devoted service. Others, however, did not retire but ended their employment by other means and motives:
  • Instructors who transferred to another campus department or program before their retirement: During its first several years of operation, Grossmont Junior College contracted faculty with multiple teaching skill sets so that they could instruct in two (or more) related disciplines. When, in 1968, the English Department started to expand its faculty and course offerings, this practice was largely discontinued. However, in 2006, the ESL Program broke away from the English Department to become a stand-alone department of its own. As a consequence, ESL instructors hired prior to 2007 have also been included on this page to credit their service to the English Department.
  • Instructors who transitioned into administrative positions: While salaried administrators now are commonly expected to possess  advanced degrees in educational administration, in some cases faculty intentionally ended their Department tenure but remained in the District to serve, instead, at the rank of division dean or higher. These are also included below.
  • Instructors who quit, were fired, or reneged on their offer of hire: Some instructors chose to leave their tenured positions or never completed their tenure track in the first place, either because they elected to pursue other careers or becasue they accepted positions elsewhere; however, in the rarest of cases, some instructors were forced to resign. Regardless of their circumstances, all have contributed in their own way to the growth and legacy of the Grossmont College English Department, so they have been included below.
