The 6th annual Lester Bangs Memorial Reading honors the music and the subversive rock ideologies embodied by groundbreaking gonzo music journalist Lester Bangs. “Collide/Escape," directed by Kristopher Apple, features an intermedia performance of poetry, narrative, instrumental music, sound design, and interactive video, by artists Christian Kjeldsen, Rachel Merfalen, Ariana Warren, Chris Warren, and GC alumni Marisol Benter and Stephen Silke. Lester Bangs, a 1968 alumnus of Grossmont College credited for coining the terms "punk" and "heavy metal," was honored in 2008 by the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Foundation and the English Department with his own bronze "Walk of Fame" plaque in the college's Main Quad.

In a traditional end-of-semester tribute to its rising stars, the Grossmont College Creative Writing Program rounds out the Fall 2014 semester with a reading and performance of original poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, and other unique, evocative, and sometimes provocative forms of literary and spoken word art. The event is always a personal favorite for students and instructors. The printed program includes read-along versions of the work, which is also available on-line.
