Stanbra, Hathaway sign on with AztecsNew SDSU head coach Chuck Long has signed two Grossmont linemen to scholarships. All-State defensive end Brian Stanbra and offensive lineman Dan Hathaway were excited to sign with the hometown Aztecs. Stanbra, (6-4, 238) is a product of University of San Diego High school. Hathaway (6-7, 290) prepped at nearby Grossmont High school. Hutsona will play for Washington StateMurphy, Omar, Gaughen, Cruz, Mareko also sign on at universitiesGrossmont running back and national offensive player of the year Derrell Hutsona (right) has accepted a scholarship to Washington State University. Hutsona also had offers from Kansas State, and Utah among others. Other Griffins to sign scholarships are quarterback Reilly Murphy, who will play at Indiana State, WR Michael Omar with Massachusetts, OL Matt Gaughen, Francisco Cruz, and TE Jerry Mareko will all attend Sacramento State. Griffins win state championship, named National ChampsGrossmont defeated San Francisco City College 41-38 on Dec. 10th in Fresno to capture the state title. Following the game, national publication J.C. Grid-Wire named the Griffins the number one team in the country. This is the first time the Griffins have ever held such a ranking. Griffins prepare for COA Championship FestivalThe Griffins will be in Fresno this weekend to take part in the Commission on Athletics Championship Festival. The event includes state championship games for football, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and wrestling.
The Griffs will open the festivities by visiting a local children's hospital on Friday afternoon. The game will be played at the home of the San Francisco Giant's AAA affiliate the Grizzlies. Postseason honors for GriffinsQuarterback Reilly Murphy received the Joe Roth Memorial Award as the county's top JC football player. The award goes to the player who meets the athletic and academic standards of the late Roth. Murphy also was named a JC Grid-Wire Academic All-American. At the Griffins awards banquet Derrell Hutsona was named team MVP. Lineman Jake Bingham was named offensive MVP, and Brian Stanbra was defensive MVP. Read the story on EastCountySports.com |

Running back/kick returner Derrell Hutsona and defensive end Roderkus Wright have been named JC Gridwire First Team All-Americans. Defensive lineman Brian Stanbra was an honorable mention for the Griffs.

Grossmont overcame a 19-0 deficit to defeat host El Camino. Derrell Hutsona had a school record 365 total yards in the win. Grossmont now will get a shot at avenging its only loss of the season, when the Griffs travel to College of the Canyons Saturday Dec. 3rd at 7pm.

Join the fun and ride up in comfort to the 2nd Round COA Football Playoff game between the Griffins and El Camino College at El Camino, kick off is at 7:00 p.m. We have arranged for a spirit bus to depart from the college at 3:15 on Saturday, November 26th. The cost is $20.00 per person. If you would like to guarantee your seat we are accepting pre-payment in the athletic office (Room 429) until 3:30 p.m., Wednesday. Saturday we will fill the remaining seats on a first come, first served basis.
There has been much interest in a spirit bus and we believe seats may go fast. There are seats remaining. If you have questions please call Leslie at 644-7412.
Grossmont quickly jumped on the visiting Vaqueros, and built a huge lead at the half, defeating Glendale 42-10. Reilly Murphy threw four first half TD passes, and the Grossmont defense stifled Glendale.

Heading the list of All-Foothill Conference selections was Derrell Hutsona. The freshman back was named Offensive MVP, and first team All-Conference. Center Matt Gaughen was the only other offensive player to be named to the first team. Second team honors went to WR Michael Omar and K Jared Ballman. The Griffs placed five players on the first team defense. They were DE Roderkus Wright, DE Brian Stanbra, LB Matt Westrick, CB Terry Mixon, and S Adam Cooper. Honorable mentions were QB Reilly Murphy, OL Jake Bingham and Dan Hathaway, RB Kevin Smith, WR Mario Brunker, and CB Brett St. James.

Grossmont, seeded third will open the 2005 playoffs by hosting 6-seed Glendale College in the Southern California Bowl, Saturday the 19th at 1pm. The Vaqueros were champions of the Western State Conference's Southern division.

Derrell Hutsona, a 5-10, 182-pound fullback out of Helix High school and San Jose State, scored four touchdowns as the Griffins' defeated San Diego Mesa 62-3 in their regular-season finale.
His touchdowns came on a 24-yard pass from Reilly Murphy, a 1-yard run, an 18-yard run and a 62-yard punt return.
