Open to student-athletes entering grades 9-12, the focus of the Grossmont College Offensive Line Techniques Camp is to provide young offensive linemen the opportunity to further develop their fundamentals, skills, and techniques for offensive line play.

Individual coaching, as well as group work, will assist in helping players to develop not only the techniques to play, but also the development of each player's confidence.

Mauga named Athlete of the Week

(11/24) Palomar College basketball player Kevin Deeb and Grossmont football player Homer Mauga have been selected by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as Men's Athletes of the Week.

Mauga, a 6-foot-0, 220-pound sophomore linebacker from Helix High School, contributed seven tackles and a sack, his 15th of the season, as the Griffins traveled to El Camino College and upset the Warriors 27-22 in the U.S. Bank Beach Bowl.

The National Division Southern Conference game between Saddleback College (7-2) and Grossmont College (7-2) will be shown live on the Gaucho Sports Network at 6:00 PM, PST on Saturday night.

Saddleback will be looking to play the role of the spoiler for Grossmont, who could advance to the Southern California playoffs with a win. A loss by the Griffins would knock Grossmont into fourth place and would land Palomar College (8-2) in the playoffs. The Comets have already finished the regular season and would have the tiebreaker advantage over Saddleback after defeating the Gauchos 27-21 on October 10.

Saddleback is 11-5-1 lifetime against Grossmont, with the latest being a 38-21 win over the Griffins in 2008. Saddleback led by as many as 24 points late in the game against Grossmont last season, rolling up 478 yards of offense in the process. The Griffins, however, won the two previous meetings in 2001 and 2002 in a series that started back in 1969.

Santa Ana hands Grossmont last second loss

(11/9) In their lowest scoring game of the season Grossmont fell victim to a last second field goal by Santa Ana's Chase Lansford to lose 10-13. The loss was Grossmont's only at home this season.

The offensive bright spot for the Griffins was a 108 yard effort by running back Joseph DeMartino. The Griffins lone score of the game came two and a half minutes into the third quarter on a 60-yard connection from Matt Jarvis to Jon Molzen.

On the ensuing kickoff Santa Ana's Ryan Handford lost the ball on his own 18-yard line and it was recovered by Grossmont's Damien Smith. The turnover setup a Troy Muenzer field goal and the game would remain tied until Lansford's field goal with 20 seconds to play.

Defensively Grossmont's Jarrod Watson registered a sack, and Homer Mauga had one-and-a-half sacks and a fumble recovery. Defensive back Kyle Monson broke up three Santa Ana passes.

The Griffins wrap up their season next Saturday at Saddleback.

Griffins score big late, beat Orange Coast

(10/24) The host Griffins used an explosive second half to pound visiting Orange Coast College 43-12 on Saturday at Mashin-Roth Stadium.

The Griffins expanded on a 10-3 halftime lead by scoring 33 points in the second half for the final margin of victory.

Quarterback Matt Jarvis threw touchdown passes of 61, 60, 50, and 37 yards to three different receivers. On the afternoon Jarvis was 16-fo-30 for 367 yards and no interceptions.

Jacob Podpora was Jarvis' top target hauling in 6 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

The defensive backfield of the Griffins was tested all afternoon with DB Cory Bell making two interceptions of Pirate passes. Bell also had three pass breakups.

Defensive back Kyle Monson had another impressive game with a team-best eight tackles, broke up two passes and had a touchdown saving interception in his own end zone. Homer Mauga applied the pressure for Grossmont tallying two quarterback sacks, six tackles, and one hurry.

Griffins remain unbeaten, defeat Long Beach

(10/11) Grossmont College's defense stifled visiting Long Beach on Saturday en route to a 21-9 victory. Defensive back Kyle Monson had a career day intercepting three passes while being continually tested by the Vikings' passing attack.

It was clear that the Vikings intended to use their height advantage and attack Monson with receivers who measured 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-6. Two of the interceptions came in the end zone stopping Long Beach scoring opportunities, Monson nearly had a fourth pick, but was unable to stay in bounds.

Grossmont's defense held Long Beach to 55 total yards rushing led by Alexander Wong's 11 tackles. The Vikings were able to make the game competitive with their air attack passing for 354 yards, yet they were only able to find the end zone once.

Quarterback Dorian Staton rushed for 63 yards and a score, and was 20-fo-36 with a touchdown pass and no interceptions. Running backs Ramon Judkins paced the ground attack with 85 yards. Running back Darrin Alix added a rushing touchdown along with 34 total yards.

The Griffins travel to Fullerton next Saturday for a 6:00pm kickoff at Fullerton High School.

Griffins overpower Southwestern

(9/20) Grossmont College overcame a sluggish and penalty-marred first half to rout visiting Southwestern 59-20 at home on Saturday. The Jaguars capitalized on Grossmont turnovers and penalties to jump out to a 10-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Griffins were without running back and PCAC Player of the Week Joseph DeMartino and quarterback Brandon Fricke for the entire game due to injuries.

Quarterback Matt Jarvis completed 12-of-27 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns Jarvis also rushed for two touchdowns. Running back Darrin Alix carried the load on the ground for the Griffins rushing 20 times for 139 yards and a touchdown. Running back Ramon Judkins added 49 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dorian Staton -playing in the second half- rushed for a touchdown and threw for another.

The Grossmont defense dominated the visiting Jaguars limiting them to just 203 yards of offense, and picking up four fumbles. Defensive lineman Ja'Rodd Watson had a big day with a sack, a forced one fumble (which he also picked up) and another fumble recovery. Jonathan Darby and Damien Smith each had in interception for the Griffin secondary.

DeMartino named Player of the Week

(9/17) Grossmont College running back Joseph DeMartino was named Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.

DeMartino is a 5-foot-11, 205-pound freshman out of Mt Carmel High School. He was the offensive stalwart in Grossmont's 61-14 rout of visiting College of the Desert last week. He totaled 179 yards rushing against COD including a 61-yard touchdown run.

COSTA MESA (10-26-08) - Grossmont College requested only one thing from former third-string and now starting quarterback BRANDON FRICKE: Don't force anything and simply manage the game.

Overcoming an early interception, Fricke took advantage of a couple of key situations handed to him by the Griffins defense to upend host Orange Coast, 21-13, Saturday (Oct. 25) at LeBard Stadium.

Fricke, who completed 13-of-29 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, seemed reasonably comfortable in his first collegiate start.

"There were some butterflies, but that's what I work for - I had to perform," noted Fricke. "I found out at the beginning of the week on Monday or Tuesday - it wasn't for sure, but by the end of the week, I knew for sure that I was starting."

Meanwhile, the Grossmont defense and special teams units again performed admirably, limiting Orange Coast to just 278 yards in total offense, including a mere 53 rushing yards on 41 carries.

Leading the charge was ELLIOT CHAMPAN, who registered 2.5 of the Griffins' five quarterback sacks. Nine other plays went for losses, including a long chase sequence by TERRANCE JOYNER, who finally captured Pirates quarterback Taylor Hughes for a key 24-yard loss in the fourth quarter.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Grossmont special teams set-up Fricke with excellent field position. ABRAHAM MUHEIZE broke through the line to block an OCC punt, with KYLE BROWN recovering the ball at the Pirates-30.

Griffins falter, fall to Fullerton

(10/19) El Cajon, CA - Grossmont entered Saturday's showdown with visiting Fullerton riding a dominating three game winning streak that saw them outscore their opponents by an average of 44-8.

At the end of the day, it was the Griffins (4-3, 2-1) who were on the wrong side of a blowout, falling to No 19 Fullerton (5-1, 2-0) 44-15.

The once-potent Grossmont offense struggled through the first three quarters and only managed a 37-yard Brandon Bogotay field goal over the first 45 minutes of play. The offense squandered a monster game by running back Garen Demery who rushed 18 times for 184 yards, and caught four passes for 34 yards.

The Griffin offense struggled to find a rhythm, and for good reason. Grossmont was without the services of tailback Jamar Reid, who did not dress. Quarterback John Soli was limited to just a few plays in the second half due to a shoulder injury.

Grossmont will attempt to regroup Saturday October 25th at Orange Coast College at 6pm.

Grossmont defense drowns Long Beach

LONG BEACH (10-12-08) - With little stress or concern, Long Beach City College quarterback Josh Powell marched his Vikings on a 9-play, 77-yard scoring drive to open Saturday's (Oct. 11) Southern Conference contest against visiting Grossmont College.

"That was embarrassing," admitted Griffins free safety ABRAHAM MUHEIZE. "So we started to put some pressure on their quarterback - we let him know we were around after we started to man up."

Nine sacks and three interceptions later - including a 17-yard touchdown runback on a theft by Muheize - Grossmont ran off 33 unanswered points to roll over the Vikings, 33-7, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The triumph leaves the Griffins and Saddleback -
a 24-21 winner over Palomar - on top of the "Super 7" conference. Idle Fullerton, which visits Grossmont next Saturday (Oct. 18) at 1 p.m., is also unbeaten in conference play at 1-0.

Griffins blossom when it counts, rattle Palomar with ease, 49-3

EL CAJON (10-5-08) -- For more than three decades, Grossmont and Palomar colleges never played a football game of any great significance, sans a couple of bowl games.

When the new Southern California Football Association was recently formed, it was only natural to place these geographic rivals -- finally -- in the same conference. On Saturday (Oct. 4), the schools met in a conference game for the first time since the mid-1970s. And it was the inaugural contest in the new Southern Conference to boot.

In a one-sided affair, Grossmont scored touchdowns over four consecutive possessions to mount a 26-0 first-half advantage, as the Griffins made the previously undefeated and 15th nationally ranked Comets look "Foothill-ish" in a 49-3 victory.

Griffins return to form, drill Chaffey

EL CAJON (9-28-08) - Running the football in obscurity most of the season, Grossmont College tailback JAMAR REID worked seemingly unnoticed by even his own coaching staff.

With his name listed as "Reed" throughout the opening weeks, Reid burst from the shadows Saturday (Sept. 27), proving that there is indeed an 'I" in team.

Reid, a sophomore out of New Berlin, N.Y. , registered three touchdowns, including a back-breaking 80-yard kickoff for a score moments after visiting Chaffey finally got on the scoreboard, lifting the Griffins to an easy 51-16 win over the previously undefeated Panthers in non-conference action at Mashin-Roth Memorial Stadium.

"I got my 'I' back -- it feels a lot better," said Reid. "We came back home and worked hard all week as a whole team (after losing to Southwestern) and finally got a win out of it."

Over the past decade, either Grossmont and Chaffey has captured the Foothill Conference championship. But due to realignment, this might be the final meeting between the schools for several years in a hard-fought rivalry.

And just like the majority of those Foothill encounters, the Griffins (2-2) held the advantage for the first time all season by striking early to put away Chaffey (3-1), exploding to a 21-0 lead just 6 1/2 minutes into the contest.

Jaguars jab Griffins, 14-10

CHULA VISTA (9-21-08) - In a near identical script from last week's setback, Grossmont College dominated on defense to keep giving its offense an array of second chances, but the Griffins reached the end zone just once in a frustrating setback to Southwestern College, 14-10, in Saturday's (Sept. 20) non-conference contest at DeVore Stadium.

The Jaguars' victory was their first over Grossmont in nearly a decade, snapping an 8-game losing streak dating back to 1999.

"It's frustrating, but were still coming together" said linebacker PAT KELLY, who registered an interception and a sack. "It's no one's fault and we can't blame the offense -- we win as a team and lose as a team, and that's all that matters at Grossmont."

Similar to a loss at College of the Desert, Grossmont's offense dropped the ball to the tune of three fumbles (two lost) in the opening eight minutes. The miscues allowed the Jaguars (1-2) to grab an early 7-0 lead on a 10-yard scoring pass from Ryan Nelson to receiver George Bell.

Southwestern would keep the advantage throughout, making a winner of Jaguars coach ED CARBERRY, a former Griffins assistant.

Leading the pack was former Helix running back KENSLOW SMITH, who paced the Jags attack with 174 yards on 38 carries.

Griffins rally falls short

PALM DESERT (9-14-08) -- The Grossmont Griffins gift-wrapped three early turnovers which eventually gave College of the Desert a 23-0 first-quarter lead. But when the Griffins switched quarterbacks, Grossmont was in position for the second-greatest comeback in school history.

Paced by the return of DAN LEWIS, the sophomore threw for 265 yards in the second half, including three touchdowns over the final 7:46 of the fourth period. But when the Roadrunners covered an onsides kickoff with 1:10 remaining, they released a long sigh of relief after holding on to Saturday's (Sept. 13) tight 47-40 non-conference triumph at Boone Field.

"If we gave up on the field, a lot of guys in the locker room would be feeling down and things just wouldn't be right," said Lewis. "But this lets our guys know we can still play football -- we've got a good team and we're coming together."

Griffins roll up Mesa 31-14 in opener

EL CAJON (9-7-08) - Grossmont College held an audition of sorts in Saturday's (Sept. 6) season-opening 31-14 victory over visiting San Diego Mesa College at Mashin-Roth Field.

Head coach MIKE JORDAN was pleased to note that this was the first time in his 3-year tenure that the Griffins had won their opening game.

-That was a good feeling," Jordan said. -We made the usual first-game mistakes and all that, but we probably played between 80 and 90 guys. The guys that didn't get in shouldn't think that we're discounting them. Some of them aren't quite familiar with the offense, others have minor injuries, but even in practice when reps are so important, it's difficult to operate with a squad this large."

At present Grossmont's roster features 115 players.

-Normally we wouldn't carry this many," Jordan said. -But we have a lot of good players and we need to evaluate them all."

Grossmont is the only team in the state that did not conduct a scrimmage against an outside opponent.

Outlook
After dominating the now defunct Foothill Conference for decades, the Griffins will be confronted by a flashier promenade of foes in the inaugural Southern California Football Association's National Southern Conference. Champions of the Foothill circuit eight of the past 14 years - including four of the last five seasons - the Griffins will be tested by the state's best on a weekly basis.

Are they ready? Jordan thinks so. This is a team with excellent speed, ignited by Demery and Brown.

-We have a lot of depth and talent," Jordan said. -But we only have five starters returning from last year, which tells you how young we are."

The stable of receivers is deep, but who will start at quarterback is unsettled. On the defensive side big-time safety Muheize, Grossmont South League player of the year Mauga, blue-chippers Watson and Kelly and tackle Joiner provide the makings of a solid defense.
