Griffins fend off Santa Ana in opening victory

Box Score

Santa Ana 61
Grossmont 66

(11/5/2010) - The twelfth-ranked Griffins opened the 2010-11 season with a bang racing out to an early lead before having to play catch up securing an opening night victory 66-61 over visiting Santa Ana.

Although the Griffins are the defending conference champions, only two players from that squad remain on the current roster.

The team has big shoes to fill after Head Coach Karen Caires' 09-10 squad went 26-6. Those Griffins were the first to capture a PCAC championship, and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the CCCAA state playoffs.

A staring lineup of four freshman and returning sophomore Ariel Meek learned a few lessons on their way to opening the season 1-0. After racing out to a quick 10 point lead, Grossmont saw the Dons take a 27-20 lead into halftime.

Nineteen Grossmont turnovers were the culprit in the first half but Caires righted the ship in the locker room. The Griffins only turned the ball over ten times in the second half. Grossmont outscored the Dons 46-34 in the second half to erase the deficit.

Newcomer Stevi Cooper made a quick impression logging a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Caires is certainly pleased with the early returns, "This year's team is a joy to coach and are working so hard The coaching staff is so proud that they are Griffins, they are learning so much."

Sophomore Ariel Meek canned three straight free throws to secure the victory in the waning seconds when Santa Ana was forced to foul. Meek finished with 10 points including a pair of three-pointers and five rebounds.

Chelsea Maurer, the other returner for Grossmont, logged 12 points and 7 rebounds.
