This is a film about Rachel Carson and the book that helped to begin the modern environmental movement and which has had a profound effect on the conservation of marine and aquatic life, as well as the quality of air, water and soil in all environments. It tells the story of Rachel Carson's realization of wide spread pollution from pesticides and of her struggle to write the book and battle critics after its publication.

Dying to be Heard tells the story of Michigan State University professor Dr. George J. Wallace, who discovered a link between DDT and dying birds on the MSU campus. His work was highlighted in Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring," which helped launch the modern environmental movement. The Emmy award winning film, produced by instructor, Lou D'Aria and his students in MSU's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, is based on MSU professor Jim Detjen's editorial "Breaking the 'Silence'" that first appeared in the fall 2005 issue of student produced EJ Magazine. It was broadcast by all six PBS stations in Michigan and continues to be aired.

This 2006 History Day documentary was completed by Samuel Hudnet and Justin Tibbels and won the silver medal at the National History Day 2006 contest.   Directed by the Maryland Humanities Council since 1999, Maryland History Day is an engaging, year-long educational program that culminates in a statewide history contest among thousands of Maryland students every April.
