Verb Types

VerbsIn general, verbs answer the question, “What’s occurring?" However, there are different ways to interpret "occurring":

doing
happening
being
sensing
affecting
causing.

Any one of these presents its own slightly different answer to the question (e.g., "What action is [he/she/it] sensing?").

Each, then, makes its own different type of verb.  This section of your handbook will examine those different types, which include the following and their related topics:

Transitive
Intransitive
Linking
Causative
Factitive
Auxiliary
Phrasal
Direct Objects
Indirect Objects
Complements
