Help Offered in the English Writing Center

The English Writing Center (EWC), under the purview of the English Department, is staffed with English instructors as well as tutors.

The EWC is open to all students at Grossmont College; students can receive help in any of the following areas:

English 61, English 62, English 63, and English 64

One of the EWC’s missions is to help students improve their overall writing skills in terms of proper grammar usage and development of coherent and well-organized essays. Certificated instructors support the instruction of college level writing skills in the form of four courses: English 61, English 62, English 63 and English 64. Any Grossmont College student can, through these courses, seek help in various aspects concerning of the writing process. For more information about these courses, click here. IDS 198: Supervised Tutoring (ESL, Reading, and Writing)

Reading and Writing Assistance:

Tutors embrace the mission of the EWC by helping both native speakers and ESL students who are enrolled in course(s) at Grossmont College.  To begin, they support students with all aspects of the writing process.  To do so, students are encouraged to bring writing assignments to the EWC to receive assistance.  In addition, tutors support all students with their vocabulary development for their reading courses by reviewing their sentence writing assignments.

  • Students may be asked for a referral from an instructor, which is often incorporated into the course syllabus.
  • Only basic skills students are given an add code for Supervised Tutoring IDS 198, which is no fee, no credit.
  • Using WebAdvisor, students enroll in IDS 198: Supervised Tutoring (ESL, Writing, or Reading) .
  • Native speakers and/or ESL students meet with a tutor for a 30-minute reading and/or writing tutoring  session.

In brief, students need to be aware of the following:

  • Students see a tutor for no more than 2 sessions daily.
  • No appointment is necessary.
  • Students are served on a first come, first served basis only.
  • Students may not request a specific tutor at any time.

The EWC has the following resources available to assist students:

  • During a tutoring session, other writing skills resources such as dictionaries, thesauruses, and grammar handbooks are available.
