Annual LAFs 1998-2002

Literary Arts Festivals

During the early years of the Literary Arts Festival, from 1998 to 2002, Grossmont College was just starting to transition to internet technology.  No official websites were designed, and traditional methods of promotion were used instead, such as local San Diego and El Cajon newspapers, campus newsletters, radio ads, and public service announcements.

The scope of the Festivals was also smaller, though this did not affect the quality of the events and the caliber of the guests that headlined the Literary Arts Fest.  Some of those first guests included

  • Native American poet and lesbian advocate Paula Gunn Allen
  • storyteller and writer Cathy Spagnoli
  • slam poet Lizzie Wann

Some guests were featured at more than one Festival:

  • poet Steve Kowit
  • Judy Reeves, originator of the Brown Bag Writers group
  • Adrian Arancibia and the Taco Shop Poets, Chicano/Latino performance poetry collective
