Undated Letter 1 (1963) |
Letter to Tamara:
Dear:
Dispense we must with all formalities—whatno and get down to the point, which is this: I have been thinking
and drinking
orange juice in my hand
sticks to the paper because I spilled it all over me and anyway I think you should know this:
Remember the other day I was sarcastic with Jack Philips about books and you chastised me for it, saying I should “be kind to my lessers” or some such drivel (I detected a note of sarcasm in your voice when you said that, especially upon “lessers”).
Anyway, I have no lessers. All that stuff I wrote and told you about the worthless masses and artistic demigods was alot of bullsh*t.
I’m on this earth (cliche) to have a good time, and if Jack Philips is having a good time,
he’s just as valuable. A human being as I am or even if he is trying to have a good time but doesn’t know how as yet.
Anyway, if you were hurt by my sarcasm (as you said you were) and he was hurt by it (as I surmise he was), then you’re both fools, because sarcasm is only a coverup for frustrations or insecurity feelings. Ask Dr. Freud.
What a bunch of delightful stupid clowns we humans are! We go around being made inferior by each others’ inferiority!
The great secret is not to take everything so seriously.
If you don’t hava GOOD time while you’re here, then what’s the use of living.
And always watch out for fraudulence & affectations (especially within yourself).
FEAR is the enemy of WISDOM.
Rid yourself of your fear, and you will rid yourself of lies and of insecurity feelings.
All this is true
and basic wisdom
shared by such diverse personages
(well, not really)
as Bertrand Russell[1] & Confucious [sic]
Don’t ever believe anything anyone says
Oberve [sic] them
Psychoanylize [sic] them without their knowing it
Be wise, courageous, virtuous and kindly.
Then go home and shoot your mother between the eyes.
[1] Russell, Bertrand. b. 1872. British philosopher, social critic, Nobel laureate, and activist who, in the early 20th century, led the “revolt against idealism” in the UK. He is widely regarded as the founder of analytic philosophy.
