Nursing

Program Description
As defined by the American Nurses Association, professional nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual and high-risk health problems. The Associate Degree Registered Nursing Programs at Grossmont College prepares men and women for national licensure to practice professional nursing in critical, acute, chronic, ambulatory and home health care settings. For students without previous nursing education, the nursing courses cover four semesters plus the prerequisite science courses. Nursing science didactic is coordinated with laboratory experience in local hospitals and health agencies under the guidance of nursing faculty members. In addition to the nursing courses, the major requires selected general education courses from the natural, behavioral and social sciences. A special application for this major is required. Applications to the Nursing Program will be accepted for both programs after prerequisite requirements are met.

THE GROSSMONT COLLEGE NURSING DEPARTMENT OFFICES ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO THE CORONA VIRUS. WE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO PHONES BUT WE WILL BE CHECKING OUR EMAILS DAILY.  CONTINUE TO CHECK THIS PAGE FOR UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS.

UPDATE 6/29/2020
The unprecedented situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic has been rapidly changing. Our goal is to provide as much information as possible.  However, please keep in mind that we do not have answers to all questions, but we will share new information as soon as it becomes available.  Please continue checking this site for the latest updates.
Below are frequently asked questions from applicants and potential applicants.

Q:  I applied to the nursing program for the Fall 2020 cohort. What should I expect?
A:  Since we do not have access to clinical sites because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we did not have any students graduating from the program in Spring 2020.  As a result, we will not be able to accept new students in Fall 2020. We are keeping the applications that we have received and instead of applying for Fall, your application will be considered for the Spring 2021 cohort if we have access to the clinical sites in Fall 2020.  Please email to grossmont.nursing@gcccd.edu by 10/2/20 if you would like you application to be removed from the application pool.
Q:  Will I be able to add to my turned in application packet to increase my points?
A:  Unfortunately, you will not be able to submit additional documentation for extra points.  Due to the unforeseen circumstances, we will not be able to modify submitted applications.  If you are not accepted and choose to reapply during a future application period, you will then submit your documentation for increased points with an updated application packet.
Q:  When will the notifications for acceptance to the Spring 2021 cohort be sent out?
A:  At this time, we anticipate sending out notifications at he end of October.  However, it will all depend on the situation with the clinical sites and the COVID-19 related situation.  All students who submitted an application for Fall 2020 will receive an email the address they provided on their application.
Q:  When is the next application period?
A:  Once the current students are able to return to the clinical agencies, we will be looking at resetting the next application period.
Q:  How will Pass/No Pass (N/NP) be handled?
A:  Students must have grades for all prerequisites, no P/NP will be accepted.
Q:  How will Excused Withdrawals (EW) be handled?
A:  If students had to EW because of COVID-19, we will not count those courses as attempts and will not count against the applicant's.
Q:  Will on-line prerequisite labs be accepted for the Grossmont College Nursing program?
A:  If students took classes with labs on-line during the COVID-19 Pandemic during the spring, summer and fall of 2020, we will accept them.  It will not count against the applicants.

ADMISSION PROCESS
Admission to the program is based upon the California State Chancellor's multi-criteria screening tool, Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS ) score, degrees, work experience, life experiences, and second language proficiency. See grid for the new multi-criteria and point values for admission screening purposes. Please see Applying for complete information.

If you are invited into the program and are requesting financial aid for the fall or spring cohort, please be sure to apply for financial aid during the months of January or February so that aid is available in time for the program start.

*Please note, if you are enrolled or have accepted a seat into any other Grossmont College Health Professions Program, you will be ineligible to receive an invitation to the Nursing Program. Students wishing to apply to the program must apply for an entry date which does not conflict with the completion of the program currently enrolled in.
TEAS test update
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is used as part of the admissions process by Nursing and Allied Health programs nationwide.  On August 31, 2016 an updated ATI TEAS will be released.  Students taking the exam on or after August 31, 2016 will need to purchase the 6th edition of the TEAS study manual.
The 6th edition of the TEAS exam is required to apply to the Grossmont College Nursing Program beginning with the spring 2017 application period.  We will accept the best score out of your first two attempts, but the attempts must be a minimum of 30 days apart.

Please see the TEAS Policy section for NEW updates.
Flu update (10/26/2018)
Following the fall 2018 semester, the Nursing Program will no longer be able to accept a declination of the flu vaccine for any reason due to recent requirements enacted by local clinical facilities.  Students are required to be vaccinated yearly.

LVN to RN Transition Program
Licensed Vocational Nurses will now be considered for both the spring semester and fall semesters, allowing them to apply at both application periods. If the minimum number of qualified applications are not received during the application periods, then there will be no offer of the LVN-RN Step-up Program.  LVN's application scores will then be calculated into the Generic programs.  If you are within the top 40 applicants, you will be invited to attend the full 2 year Generic ADN Program.
Background Check and Drug Screen
Important: Any prior conviction of a misdemeanor or felony may influence eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse. A flagged background check or drug screen may also prohibit entrance and/or participation in the nursing program. Applicants with prior convictions are required to contact the Director of Nursing for confidential advisement and planning prior to applying to the program and visit the California Board of Registered Nursing website for general information. http://www.rn.ca.gov/applicants/lic-faqs.shtml#disc.

Biology 120 prerequisite for the Grossmont College ADN Program
Effective fall semester 2014, Grossmont College will accept a one year high school biology course with lab and a grade of "C" or higher, to fulfill the Biology 120 prerequisite needed for the required science prerequisites for students majoring in nursing only.
If you are a local area high school student, you must submit high school transcripts verifying successful completion with a "C" or higher of a biology course with a lab to the prerequisite clearance specialist at http://www.grossmont.edu/assessment/prerequisite.asp. Click on Nursing for specific instructions. When emailing the request for clearance, attach an unofficial copy of your HS transcripts listing the course and grade. It takes approximately 2 weeks for your request to be processed.

If you are a non-local area or out of state high school student, you must submit high school transcripts verifying successful completion with a grade of "C" or higher of a biology course with a lab, a copy of the course description and/or a letter from the registrar or campus administrator verifying the biology course taken contains a lab and meets the requirement for the prerequisite. Submit the above items to the prerequisite clearance specialist at http://grossmont.edu/assessment/prerequisite.asp. Click on Nursing for specific instructions. It takes approximately 2 weeks for your request to be processed.

Please note that the required science courses are highly rigorous and multiple attempts are not allowed by the Nursing Program. Should you need to complete a General Biology course to successfully pass the Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology, it is strongly recommended that you continue your education beyond high school biology and first complete Biology 120.

High School biology can be used to clear Biology 120 for Biology 140, 141, 144 and 152 for Grossmont College Nursing Majors only. Cuyamaca College nor other Grossmont College Health Professions programs will not accept this method to clear their prerequisites. This option no longer applies if the student changes their major.
