I Sold My Body

I Sold My Body (By the Pound)/Flesh For Sale

WRITING CREDITS:

Lester Bangs

Sat down and wrote ten million words
Sent them off like flocks of birds
I didn’t care about copyrights
Now some sick sucker owns my flights.

ABOUT THE LYRICS:

Lester Bangs performed the unpublished song, "I Sold My Body" (a.k.a. "Flesh For Sale), at his June 1977 CBGB's performances (June 12-14). During the song's hook, Bradly Field (road manager for the Cramps and drummer for Lydia Lunch's group, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks) shouted in reply, "By the pound!" which is now sometimes added to the song title. On stage, Bangs was accompanied by Jody Harris, David Hofstra, Jay Dee Dougherty, and Robert Quine.

The Fales Library and Special Collections, Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, which is now home to Peter Dougherty's collection containing the original 1/4 inch tapes of Bangs's CBGB's performance, has catalogued this track erroneously under the title, "I Sold My Babe."

A studio version of "Flesh For Sale" was recorded at New York's Big Apple Studios in May 1977 for Ork Records's never-released Lester Bangs's EP. However, the only tantalizing hint of the lyrics is made available in Jim DeRogatis's biography. If you happen to know the lyrics, have a recording, or can offer more information about the song, please contact this website's archivist.
