Loneliness

Loneliness [demo]

WRITING CREDITS:
Lester Bangs and Mickey Leigh[1]

What can drive you
to a sullen bar
yearning women
from afar?

Loneliness.
Loneliness.
Loneliness.

What can make you scratch
in the middle of the floor?
Beat your soul until your
flesh gets sore?

Loneliness.
Loneliness.
Loneliness.

What can drive you mad
as you push and shove
up against the one—
the one you truly, truly love?

Loneliness.
Loneliness.
Loneliness.

There is no palliative.[2]
It’s hollow, and hard as stone.
Is it easier to really give
or be alone?

What can make your hair stand
right on end
while your heart is doing them
deep knee bends?

Loneliness.
Loneliness.
Loneliness.

Milk white calves
shining in the street
Now that you notice they—
they ain’t so sweet.

Loneliness.
Loneliness.
Loneliness….

ABOUT THE LYRICS:

[1] One of the songs co-written by Lester Bangs and Birdland's Mickey Leigh that the latter rescued from a recovered 1979 rehearsal tape.  Later, Mickey Leigh's New Yorkestra would re-record the song, but presently no recording with Bangs on lead vocals is known to exist.

[2] palliative: a tranquilizer or painkiller
