Background and Bio

Barbara Luella (Wangsness Kurtis) Faber completed her undergraduate studies at University of South Dakota in 1947, where, in addition to other scholarly accomplishments, she was crowned USD's Miss Dakota 1946. After receiving her A.B., Faber spent a year abroad in Norway studying literature and other courses of cultural interest. When she returned, she completed her Master’s Degree in English by May of 1949 with a scholarly focus on Robert Graves and utopian writing.

Now married, Barbara and her husband relocated to California by 1961, where Faber took an English instructor position for Fresno City College. By the end of spring of that same year, Fresno City College President, John S. Hansen, departed for San Diego to become the first president of Grossmont Junior College. The next year, the Fabers also picked up stakes and moved to San Diego, where she accepted a full-time faculty position in the English Department.

The class schedules of that time show Faber to have taught standard courses such as Reading and Composition and English Fundmentals. However, she is also listed as having taught American Civilization courses for the History Department, demonstrating once again the College's proclivity at that time for hiring educators who could teach in multiple disciplines.

In 1965, though, Faber voluntarily ended her teaching contract with Grossmont College.
