Grossmont College Men's Volleyball

A Tradition of Competitive Greatness

  • Five, third place finishes in the State Tournament (1981, 1983, 1994, 1999, 2000)
  • Orange Empire Conference Champions (2000) with a record of 15-1
  • So Cal Regional Champions in 1999
  • So Cal Regional Participant in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007

Coaching

With the exception of 1981 and 1983, current head coach, Fred Featherstone, has been the active head coach since 1990. He has been Coach of the Year in 1994, 1998, and 2000. He was selected Pacific Coast Conference All Sports Coach of the Year in 2007. In 1995, Coach Featherstone was head coach of the women's program at Grossmont and he led the Lady Griffs to the Pacific Coast Conference Championship and he was named Coach of the Year.

Career Highlights -Coach Fred Featherstone - Grossmont College

  • 1964/ Founded and coached the first boys volleyball program at Mira Costa H.S.
  • 1973-74/ Head Boy's Coach at La Jolla H.S. Finished second in CIF - San Diego in '74.
  • 1976-77/ Head Men's Coach at Southwestern College. Finished second in the Pacific Coast Conference in '77.
  • 1980-86/ Head Women's Coach at United States International University (USIU) in San Diego. West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC) Co-Champs with Pepperdine in 1986. NCAA, Division I At-Large Tournament participant in '86.
  • 1987-89/ Head Boy's and Girl's club coach at both 18 and 16 and under.
  • 1990-2010/ Founder/Director/Coach of the Seaside Boy's Volleyball Club in San Diego. US Junior Olympic Medalist nine times including three National Championships in the 18 and under Open Division in 1992, 1997, and 2006.
  • 1995/ Head Women's Coach at Grossmont College. Pacific Coast Conference Champs and Coach of the Year.
  • 1990-2010/ Head Men's Coach at Grossmont College. Orange Empire Conference Champs in 2000 and Conference runner-up in 1992, '93, '99, and 2007. Three, third place State Tournament Final finishes in 1994, '99, and 2000. Seven, SoCal Regional appearances in 1992, '93, '98, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007.
    Coach of the Year in 1994, '99, and 2000.
  • Pacific Coast Athletic Conference All Sports Coach of the Year in 2007.
  • 1991/ Head Men's West Team Coach at the Los Angeles Summer Olympic Festival. Second place finish in Gold Medal Match.
  • Coached numerous former and present US Olympic players including Erik Sullivan, Richard Lambourne, Reid Priddy, David Lee and current AVP greats Matt Olson and Matt Prosser.
  • Career victory total stands at 305.
