I Fought The Law
WRITING CREDITS:Sonny Curtis
Breakin' rocks in the hot sun.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
I needed money 'cause I had none.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
I miss my baby and it feels so bad.
Guess my race is run.
She's the best girl that I ever had.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
Robbin' people with a six-gun.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
I miss my baby and the good fun.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
I miss my baby and I feel so sad.
I guess my race is run.
She's the best girl that I ever had.
I fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.
[Kiss that, baby.]
APPEARS ON
Birdland With Lester Bangs, LP, CD
Track §6
LP: Add On Records, AD#101 (1986); LP, CD reissue: Dionysus Records, Bacchus Archives 1118 (1998)
ABOUT THE LYRICS:
A cover of the hit song by folk artist Sonny Curtis, popularized by Bobby Fuller and the Bobby Fuller Four, then again by The Clash on their 1979 EP, The Cost of Living, to which this Birdland version seems in part an homage.
Unlike the Jook Savages cover of Dale Hawkins's folk ditty, "Grandma's House," the lyrics of Birdland's "I Fought the Law" are virtually unchanged from the original.
