A Day of Indian Unity and Healing: Grand Gathering Ceremony

Marking Native People’s Day of Healing and the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, Grossmont College’s Grand Gathering Ceremony featured community leaders and performances by Native American artists. Major sponsors for "A Day of Indian Unity and Healing" at Grossmont include WACO, the American Indian Movement San Diego Chapter, the Council of American Indian Organizations of San Diego County, and the Grossmont Cross-Cultural Studies Department.

Master performance capoeira, Afro-Brazilian Martial Art, Samba, Puxada de Rede (a traditional fisherman dance ritual), Dança do Côco (dance to the sound of a coconut beat); Maculelê (fight-like dance that uses sticks as weapons), Dança Guerreira (a tribute to historical warrior ceremonies), and Samba-Reggae (an fusion of traditional Samba with elements of various other musical styles, including reggae).
David Faber: “Because of Romek: A Holocaust Survivor’s Memoir” Friday, November 19, 2004, 12:30 p.m., Room 26-220
Acclaimed lecturer, educator and author David Faber, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor, will speak about his book. Faber became a partisan resistance fighter at age 14. He survived eight different concentration camps, including Auschwitz, between 1939 and 1945. When he was finally liberated from Bergen-Belsen in 1945, he weighed only 72 pounds. With the exception of one of his six sisters, his entire family was murdered under Hitler’s Nazi regime. Because of Romek fulfills the promise Faber made to his mother to ‘tell the world’ so that the horrors of the past would not be repeated by future generations. The life of labor leader Cesar Chavez is the subject of a screening of a film, "The Fight in the Fields," followed by a discussion led by history instructor Carlos Contreras.

Russian instructor Sofia Rozenblat brings Catherine the Great back life to talk about her life.
Jazz Legend Clora Bryant Monday, April 11, 2005, 7 p.m., Room 225
A strong force on the Los Angeles jazz scene and one of the greats of Central Avenue, Clora Bryant is the subject of a new film documentary by independent filmmaker Zeinabu irene Davis, Bryant performed with such stars as Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday during her 60-year career, but with little recognition. Bryant answers questions about her career and the making of the documentary. Davis, a UCSD professor, will discuss filmmaking and show excerpts from the documentary, “Trumpetistically, Clora Bryant,” released later in 2005 year. Grossmont’s music instructor Derek Canon, who provides the trumpet music in the documentary, will host the presentation which is designed for students and community members.
