Black History Month 
February, 2006
Event sponsors include the Black Student Union of Grossmont College, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Inter-Club Council, the Associated Students of Grossmont College, and the Grossmont College World Arts and Culture Organization. All events are free and open to the public. 
  • February 2, Main Quad: “The Beginning—Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” with guest speaker Curtis Stevens, Ed. D., history professor and entertainment by the Afro-Cuban Ensemble, directed by Derek Cannon, instructor of music. Education and career opportunities will be presented by representatives of military organizations and Grossmont College health career programs.
  • February 10, Room 220, 6:30 p.m.: The award-winning Black Story Tellers of San Diego and Friends will perform Friday; featured performer is Victoria Burnett, a master storyteller, folklorist and vocalist. 
  • February 16, Main Quad, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.: ‘Hip Hop on the Quad’ with D.J. Leon Meyer, Associated Students of Grossmont College invites participants to “Have Lunch With Us” and receive a discount with an ASGC benefit card.
  • February 23, Main Quad, 11 a.m.: Professor K.J. Greene of Thomas Jefferson School of Law will speak. A graduate of Yale Law School, Greene is noted for his work in intellectual property and entertainment law. Music entertainment by the World Beat Dancers & Drummers, and the Gene Perry Drum Group will be featured following Greene’s presentation. 
  • February 24, Room 220, 6:30 p.m.: Gospel Festival hosted by Taylor McKenzie, Ph.D., Professor of Communication. Performers will include the House of Metamorphosis Choir, directed by Carmella Bell; Dolores Stevens, soloist; the North Park Apostolic Choir, directed by Edward Baltrip; the Agape Choral Choir, directed by Dr. Rose Buchanan; and the Martin Luther King City Choir of San Diego, directed by Ken Anderson.

Women’s History Month: Fashion Around the World

March 20, 2006, Main Quad

Festival of dance and culture examining the traditional and changing roles of women in history; History instructor Devon Hansen presents a reading on women in history; Furahaa Saba performs an interpretive reading of Sojourner Truth’s ”Ain't I a Woman”; a performance of a traditional Balinese by dancer Barbara Mintz; faculty and students model traditional clothing from India, Peru, Costa Rica and Laos, organized by Edda Temoche-Weldele and Yolanda Guerrero. Also, a month-long presentation of exhibits in the Tech Mall foyer of women in history, coordinated by Dr. Sue Gonda.
 
 
World Cultures Festival
Wednesday, April 5, 2006, Main Quad
In addition to an array of displays and tasty refreshments provided by foreign language departments, ranging from Arabic to Japanese to Spanish, there will be non-stop entertainment in the Main Quad. The Grossmont College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Paul Kurakowa, will perform at 11:15 a.m., followed by the Afro-Cuban Ensemble directed by Derek Cannon. A demonstration of Tango dance will be performed by Marizabel and Todd Martin. The event will conclude with a belly dancer at 12:30. The public is invited to this free event which is sponsored by the Grossmont College World Arts and Cultures Organization, a committee of faculty, staff and students who volunteer to organize a year-long agenda of cultural events to enhance the college curriculum.
