Belly dancing, Arabic Music, free authentic Arabic buffet, Dabka, a hooping performance, and many other activities.  Organizer:  The Arabic Club.
 
 
Black History Month: David Johnson, MLK Orator
Tuesday, February 9, 2010
David Johnson, a Dr. King orator, offers a unique opportunity to "let freedom ring," in a performative recitation in the voice inflection and mannerisms of Dr. Martin Luther King and his "I Have A Dream" speech. Mr. Johnson's appearance at Grossmont was promoted with live in-studio morning TV interviews that same day on Channel 6 and Channel 5. Mr. Johnson's appearance was made possible by a grant from the Grossmont College World Arts and Cultures Committee.
 
 
Women's History Month

Mrs. Funk was a member of the “Mercury 13” Women in Space program in the 1960s. Private reception in Griffin Gate with Grossmont Middle College High School students and the Gillespie Field Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, an organization for retired women pilots. Also sponsored by he Grossmont College Foundation and ASGC, with assistance from the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
 
 
The 2nd Annual Spring Art Festival
Wednesday, April 7, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Main Quad.
Students and the community participated in four different activities, including: Multi-Panel Collaboration, to make a small painting that will become part of a collection to be displayed on campus; Community Mural, to help paint a large canvas that says, "You Are Beautiful" Collage Table, to cut and paste images and shapes of colors to add to a collaborative visual narrative; Children's Table, art creation for the little ones. Funding for this event was provided by the GC World Arts and Cultures Committee.
 
 
14th Annual Literary Arts Festival: Write Out Loud!
Monday, April 19 - Thursday, April 29, 2010, Student Center
Tuesday, April 20, 2:00 p.m., Griffin Gate. (Festival runs Monday, April 19 - Thursday, April 29, 2010, Student Center). In this year's Write Out Loud, Chip Persons reads as a young Dubliner from James Joyce's "Araby"; Veronica Murphy's brogue beautifully accents Paul Vincent Carroll's "She Went by Gently"; Walter Ritter performs Emile Barrios's hilarious and quirky "Onomatopoeia"; and Steve Lone delivers a gritty, street-wise narrative of an excerpt from Ball Don't Lie, by Matt de la Pena, our 2010 Festival keynote author.
 
 
22nd Annual Pow Wow
Saturday, April 24, 2010, 12 noon – 9 p.m., Student Center
A day-long event celebrating American Indian cuisine, clothing, art and jewelry; bird singing and gourd dancing; American Indian dancers and drummers; recognitions, honor songs and invitations for spectators to participate in some of the dances. Sponsors included the GC Native American Club, GC World Arts and Cultures Committee, Grossmont College Foundation, GC EOPS Dept., Barona Band of Mission Indians and San Diego Unified School District Indian Education Program.
 
 
Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Wednesday, May 5, 2010, Main Quad
Presentation by Dr. Carlos Contreras, History Professor, an expert in Latin American History, who will explain the significance of the celebration and will highlight the events that took place before and after the battle.  Mariachi play traditional songs and wear the authentic “charro” costume typical of this music genre.  Students will be able to follow the songs with handouts and will be able to request songs of their choice.  Dancing will be encouraged with the many Latin American students that are part of the GC student population.  This event will also help to clarify the misconception that 5 de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day.  The students will also have the opportunity to sample authentic Mexican food that will be sold by Sodexho and taste Mexican sweet bread courtesy of WACC.
 
 
Grossmont College Arabic Club's Multi-Cultural Wedding Exhibition
Thursday May 13, 2010, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Main Quad
Grossmont College Arabic Club hosted a demonstration on the main quad of how weddings in the Arab World take place. The exhibition included zaffa, dabka, belly dancing, and free food.
