Fall Draw - Express your Identity through Art
Wednesday, December 1, 2010, Main Quad.
The Art and Design Club, with funding from the World Arts and Cultures Committee, hosts the a collaborative drawing festival. Participants collaborate, connect, interpret, observe, explore and express their inner artist by examining gesture, line, color, shape, culture and ideas through the process of drawing with others.
 
 
Black History Month: Eric Smith "From Crack to Clergy"
February 14-15, 2011
Tuesday, February 8, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Room 26-220: “A History of the Negro Baseball Leagues” lecture by Byron Motley, documentary filmmaker and motivational speaker. The history of the Negro Baseball League (1920-1960) is draped in a fabric that mirrors America’s culture from segregation to integration. Motley’s presentation will show how the progression of America’s race relation journey is reflected in events that unfolded in the Negro Baseball Leagues. The presentation will include segments from Oh How They Lived, Stories of the Negro Leagues, a television documentary that he produced. The documentary includes interviews with Motley’s father, who was an umpire in the Negro Leagues. Monday, February 14, 10:00 a.m., Main Quad: Presentation by Eric Smith, author of From Crack to Clergy. Tuesday, February 15, 8:15 a.m., Room 26-220: Presentation by Eric Smith, author of From Crack to Clergy. Wednesday, February 16, Noon, Main Quad: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Step Show Presentation. Wednesday, February 16, 12:30 p.m., Main Quad; History of Soul Food with Chef Eddie Williams. Tuesday, February 22, 12 noon, Main Quad: Performance by the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble. Thursday, February 24, 12 noon, Main Quad: Appearance by the Buffalo Soldiers (African-American regiments in the U.S. Army who served after the Civil War, primarily in the Indian wars of the late 1860s). Friday, February 25, 7:30 p.m., Room 26-220: Performance by Prof. Randall Tweed, and Ken Anderson, the Grossmont Gospel Choir and the Master Chorale. Other Black History Month events and projects include posters celebrating Black History Month posted around the campus.
 
 
Freedom Riders (50 Year event)
Thursday, March 17, 2011, Room 26-220.
Presentation by 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders, who fifty years ago risked beatings and jail for defying local segregation rules in interstate buses and railways. Event organizer T. Ford.
